The Back Story

Honey Heart’s Journey

HoneyHeart’s journey began in the 1920s when our ancestors first cultivated the unique Honeyheart watermelon in the Greek Islands. The Honeyheart seeds were then bought out to Australia by Christos relatives when migrating to Australia and taken to grow on their sugar cane farm for their own use in the Burdekin region of Far North Queensland and have remained in the family.

It remained a family secret for decades. In 2012, Christos rediscovered its exceptional taste and health benefits, leading to years of research with Central Queensland University.

By 2022, with the right partners and support, HoneyHeart was ready for commercial success. Today, we proudly offer 100% Natural Watermelon Citrulline powder and Golden Honeyheart watermelon juice, bringing this once-hidden treasure to the world.

Honey Heart’s Timeline

1920

The Honeyheart watermelon was first grown in the Greek Islands in the early 1920’s by Christos' ancestors. This is a photo of Christos Grandfather in Greece.

1940

It was then brought to Australia by his relatives when migrating to Australia in the 1940’s and taken to grow on their farms for their own use in the Burdekin region of Far North Queensland and remained in the family. In those days the growing of watermelons was very much a family affair, in many ways it is still that way today.

1940 – 2011

The watermelon has been held by the family ever since and has never been sold into the retail market, as a whole watermelon, and never will be. This has allowed the family to protect the watermelon seed lineage from the early days in the Greek Islands till today. Christos takes extreme pride in the history of the melons and has worked extremely hard to bring the product to market over many years.

2012

In early 2012, Christos initially sample tasted the “Honeyheart” Watermelon which had been gifted to him by a family member from Far North Queensland. Christos was amazed with its crisp, exotic taste, orange flesh, sorbet like texture and the subsequent refreshing feeling lasting for much longer than any other watermelon he had previously experienced.

2016

As a naturally curious “foodie” he then researched the ‘Honeyheart’ Watermelon and found that it had a very high natural concentration of natural L-Citrulline and Vitamin C which contributes to significant health and well-being benefits for human beings and other warm-blooded creatures.

Christos commenced the journey of detailed studies into the L-Citrulline benefits of the Honey Heart Melons with the assistance of Professor Mani at the Central Queensland University, whom provided significant input into understanding the value of the Honey Heart Melon powder in improving your health.

2016-2021

This led to a six year journey of discovery with Central Queensland University to identify the science and the health benefits of this unique variety of golden fleshed watermelon. This has allowed the family to protect the watermelon seed lineage from the early days in the Greek Islands till today. Christos takes extreme pride in the history of the melons and has worked extremely hard to bring the product to market over many years.

2022

Christos experienced several setbacks in his journey, and found himself seeking guidance on commercialising his product and taking to Market and funding the process. He gained both the financial and market support he required from a life-time friend and the product was finally positioned to be commercialised.

2022 – 2023

This period highlighted to Christos that he needed a partner with the commercial experience to assist him to take the Product to the next level, which culminated him in raising the necessary capital to commercially grow the HoneyHeart melons in sufficient quantity to take to market.

2023 – 2024

With the financial support needed now secured, professional farmers were contracted to grow commercial quantities of melons. A leading process manufacturer was contracted to process the melons, and the largest freeze-dried processor in Australia contracted to produce professionally milled Citrulline powder. A leading juice process manufacturer will produce and package the Golden Honeyheart watermelon juice in parallel.

2025

2025 is shaping up to be a milestone for HoneyHeart. A commercial crop grown professionally in Biloela from grafted stock, will produce our best yielded crop to date in volume. This will give us the capacity to produce significant quantity of Natural Watermelon L-Citrulline Powder as we continually refine and improve our growing techinques to maxamise the L-Citrulline levels from our Golden Honey Heart Melons.

2024 &Beyond

HoneyHeart now have contract farmers in Bundaberg, the Burdekin and Biloela, Central Qld to ensure we have a diversified farm base and the ability to produce fruit year-round. From humble and hard worked beginnings, we are now bringing the HoneyHeart benefits to you, enjoy.

About L-Citrulline

Watermelon is the major source of L-citrulline. L-citrulline is a neutral non-essential amino acid. Amino acid increases nitric oxide production in your body. Nitric Oxide widens blood vessels and improves blood circulation and lowers blood pressure.

It increases exercise performance, activity capabilities and decreases muscle soreness. As L-citrulline is not used by the intestine or metabolised by the liver, it possesses high bioavailability following oral administration and a highly specific metabolism.

In one study, all the citrulline (105% +-7% SEM) administered directly into the gastric tract was absorbed and appeared in the plasma. On the other hand, only around 30% of arginine administered by the same method reached the plasma, as most of the arginine is broken down by the liver
